Bellows - flexible corrugated monolayer or multilayer tubular sheath to separate environments, preserving the strength of axial stability and integrity under cyclic deformation. The bellows is capable of perceiving the following strains: axial (compression and tension on the bellows axis), transverse (parallel shift bellows axis) angle (change in direction of the axis of the bellows), and combinations thereof. The emergence of the torque in the end planes bellows and expansion joints is not allowed.

A single-layer bellows is used for low and medium pressure level. However, single-ply bellows can not be operated at high temperatures.

The multilayer bellows neutralize exposure to high pressure and various kinds of vibration, without causing reaction forces, which in turn provoked deformation. The flexible portion redistributes pressure on the layers and the level of stress in the multilayer bellows are much lower than in monolayer.

The geometry of the corrugations, the number of layers and the wall thickness is calculated based on operating conditions such as temperature, pressure, flexibility, rigidity and service life (number of operating cycles of loading). The material for the production of bellows is chosen based on physical and chemical properties and corrosion resistance to external and internal environment.

The term service bellows depends on the degree and amount of elastic deformation, and is measured in cycles.

Bellows are used in industrial equipment and instrument, the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines, as the flexible members and separator media.

The bellows are made by mechanical or hydraulic means, or by means of extrusion elastomers in molds.
